Frequently Asked Questions: CEM 7

Mares are cultured three (3) times during their quarantine period, and one (1) blood test is submitted for CEM serology (CF, complement fixation test performed by the NVSL in Ames, IA). After the third and final culture, they receive 5 days of treatment. This is added assurance that any potential CEM bacteria not cultured may be eliminated. Your mare will be released from Quarantine only after all 3 cultures are confirmed negative for the CEM bacteria, her CF serological test is negative for CEM exposure, her 5 days of treatment are completed, and the official USDA veterinarian issues a release statement.
