Foaling Mares: Normal and High Risk Pregnancies

I have been foaling mares, and assisting with their labor and delivery, since 1980. I could say by this point in my professional career that I have seen it all, but I am also the first to admit that every foaling is new, unique, different, and a wonderment! There is always something new and exciting to witness, experience, and observe when mares foal, and when foals begin their journey in the outside world. In my opinion, there is no other area in veterinary medicine where the art of practice melds with the science of medicine so naturally and beautifully.

Normal Pregnancy Care and Foaling

$750.00/mare, plus board at $40/day prior to foaling, then $60/day after foaling; includes pre-foaling mammary secretion testing, 24 hour observation, and application of Foalert(TM) birth monitoring system.

High Risk Pregnancy Care and Foaling

$1500/mare; plus board at $40/day prior to foaling and $60/day after foaling; includes fetal well-being monitoring by transabdominal ultrasonography, pre-foaling mammary secretion testing, and application of Foalert(TM) birth monitoring system.

Hormonal profiles and serial monitoring are additional laboratory costs as applicable on a case-by case basis.

Medications to assist fetal well-being, treat possible placentitis, and delay onset of labor are additional as applicable on a case-by case basis.

Mares brought to my barn/ facility for examinations, breeding, and / or foaling pay a one time admission fee ($40); boarded horses will not be charged a farm call.

Note: The fees listed here may not necessarily reflect the current fees set for each item. Call or email Dr. Ley for a current fee estimate.
